Service Week at South

April 26, 2018 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

South High School held its annual Service Week from April 16-20. This initiative involved numerous projects and activities that made a difference and instilled within students an appreciation for helping others.

On April 17, South hosted its annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser as part of the international grassroots effort to fight hunger. Under the guidance of teachers Roseann Valletti and Ed Lee, more than 300 participants raised a record amount of $1,300 for the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry located at Holy name of Mary Parish Outreach. Valley Caterers, Roma Ray Wholesale Bakers, Magic Bagels-Merrick Road and USA Bagels were all very generous donors of soup and baked goods and South faculty members donated 25 crocks of soup.

Those in attendance made donations in exchange for a variety of soups. The National Art Honor Society sponsored the event with assistance from the National Junior Honor Society, Character Action Team and Occupational Education Honor Society. Entertainment was provided by many talented student vocalists, as well as, The Jedwoods, The Cultural Society and The Step Squad.

Service Week also involved a community clean-up, letters written to the victims of the tragedy in Parkland, Florida, donations to the Book Fairies charity in Freeport and creation of Peace Dove banners.
